ARTIFACT RECONSTRUCTION
ANALYSIS OF FAILURE
ARTIFACT RECONSTRUCTION
Audio from this recording has been Reconstructed to more accurately capture the thesis of the intended presentation.
It is now presented here in a linear format.
The Analysis of Failure seminar was presented six times in front of select audiences.
One of these performances was recorded.
Citing the artificial context of the rehearsals, Mark Jumper deemed the recordings unsuitable for accurate conveyance of nuance.
Thus, silences have been removed and shuffles, bumps, and other tones have been reorganized into a bed of musical interpretations; all the while being careful to include only sonic elements taken from the original source.
In this way, the Analysis of Failure has been entered into the Archive as an important event in the BDTEM Chronology5.
5Submitted under the catalogue header: Ah1; eCr
The last piece Mark Jumper ever created for the BDTEM Project was a seminar called the Analysis of Failure1 in which he attempted to find meaning in the disintegration of his troubled project.
Though he never delivered the seminar publicly, rehearsals were performed before groups of colleagues2.
1Prepared during his temporary stay with the
Rueben Tolstoy Traveling Circus.
2His fellow Circus-folk.
A recording of one of these rehearsals was recovered and sent to Jumper by mail, received along with a somewhat terse but polite note3 and a blank page4 smelling faintly of rose hips.
3 "As requested. Hope you are well," signed by the Strong Lady.
4 While the particular fragrance made for an unfamiliar signature, the contents of the page were unmistakably of the Mime.
i
Long lines of gravel
underfoot rubberless
and peeled thin.
Not a shady place,
mostly hot and bent by light.
Sit.
Ancient boiling rivers
and tributaries sinking
deep into hidden holes.
Infinite reservoirs
emptying infinitely,
filling infinitely.
Never energy spent except
for all the energy left.
Stir.
Empty staircases,
hollow ringing railings
clanging struck by anything
saved before destruction.
Climb until the exits run out
and the paper stops unfolding.
Nothing today that
didn’t start yesterday;
Still.
So down from your solitude peak
At the top of the Window;
Out from behind your place
in the ‘O’ of ‘of’;
and I’ll help you whisper what
you cannot say aloud.
